Marangu Route, 6 Days

Marangu is the most popular route taken by trekkers to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. It takes you at a gentle pace through forests, moorlands and then across a high-altitude desert called ‘The Saddle ‘towards the Summit at Uhuru Point. It is generally a less expensive route to take and gives you the chance to compete the route in five days, although some people do prefer an extra day for acclimatization. One of the main differences of this route is that it offers hut accommodation which is unavailable on other routes he availability of the hut needs early reservation.

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport

Pick up from airport and transfer to accommodation in Arusha for an overnight stay.

CLIMBING DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Marangu gate 1900m to Mandara Hut (2700m)

Hiking:5h(approx 12k)

After breakfast, we will drive from Arusha to the Marangu Park gate. All hikers are required to sign in at the park entrance while the guides and porters make the final preparations. Oncecomplete, the hike will commence through the park gate into a beautifully green rainforest. The rainforest is full of wildlife and if you’re lucky enough, you might be able to spot a few animals especially the Monkeys and birds with a lot of flower species along the way to our first camp,Mandara Hut 2700m.

In these huts you will have proper lights from solar and small beds with mattress. You only need your sleeping bags on these beds.

Day 2: Mandara Hut 2700m Horombo Hut (3720m)

Hiking:6h (approx 11kms)

In the morning, we will commence our hike through more forest area, towards the rim of the Maundi Crater where you will be able to have a good view of the two higher peaks Kibo and Mawenzi and also seeing on the Northern side you will be able to see Lake Chala found at the border of Tanzania and Kenya. The area turns into moorlands heathers and you can see an array of Tanzania’s vast wildlife and nature along the journey to the next camp at Horombo Hut.On your way to Horombo Hut you will be seeing the indigenous plant of Kilimanjaro such as Lobelia Decanie and giant senesio or giant ground sell. You will have your lunch on your way as this is a little bit long day.

Day 3: Acclimization Day (3720m)

Hiking: 2hrs (Approx 4.5k)

This is a rest and acclimatization day and we will walk to either Zebra Rocks 400m or Mawenzi Hut 4200m.This is a short hiking day justto acclimatize and walk back to Horombo hut for lunch and have a good rest before hiking to Kibo Hut base camp the next day.

Day 4: Horombp Hut 3720m to Kibo Huts Base Camp 4700m Uhuru Peak (5895m)

You will hike to the Kibo Hut passing through the alpine desert and the saddle area (4-5hrs) to the Kibo Hut. You will have your lunch on your way to Kibo Hut at the Saddle area. You will have enough time to rest and the dinner will be very early before going up to the summit at the midnight.

Our journey to the Summit will begin at around midnight. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path and steep scree towards Gillman’s 5688m which is a crater rim (5-6hrs) and 1.5 to 2hrs to the summit (the Uhuru Peak).You will meet the other climbers from different routes at Stella point 5751m and join them all together on a single file trail to the summit (Uhuru Peak 5895m) where you will be able to the Kilimanjaro Crater,Mount Meru and the base camp for those coming up from different route, Northern ice field and Rebman Glacier.You will spend sometimes here taking pictures and descending back to the Kibo hut.

Day 5: Kibo Hut 4700m to Horombo Hut 3720m

Hiking: 4h (9K)

After the summit,you will hike down to the Horombo Hut foryour last night before descending to the Marangu gate the next day.

Day 6: Horombo Hut Mandara to Marangu Gate

This is a long day,the hiking is 7hrs from the Horombo Via Mandara to the gate which is 18K.Passing through the rain forest where you will be able to see two different of monkey species the blue and black and white colobus monkey with a lot of different species of flowers.

At the gate you will have you lunch,receive your certificates before driving back to Arusha where you will have a proper shower and a relaxed afternoon before dinner and an overnight at the hotel.
